Absa has hinted that will be cautious in rebranding Barclays Kenya following a court case initiated by Absa Kenya Limited.
Barclays Plc sold a major stake in Barclays Africa Group to South African Absa prompting the rebranding process after the pending change of name to Absa Group which will take place next month.
However, the rebranding process in Kenya could be interrupted by Absa Kenya which has gone to court seeking to prevent the bank’s change of name. The company has argued that Barclays’ change of name has led to losses since the announcement of the upcoming name change.
Barclays Africa officials have said Barclays Kenya is free to make a decision on the matter with a mid-2020 deadline.
“Each market will rebrand at [its] own pace. Jeremy Awori, Barclays Kenya CEO, and his team will determine when,” Zongezo Zibi, head of communication, Barclays Africa Group, said.
With regards to the court case impediments, he said: “There will be a solution.”
