Is Choppies the new inn -thing? Botswana retailer shops Choppies is the new talk in town. The shops entered the Kenyan Market in 2016 March and have so far acquired atleast seven Ukwala Stores.
The shops last month was negotiating with owners of Nanyuki Mall to rent their space after the eviction of the reknown Nakumatt supermarkets due to rent failure.
Parin Patel, the director of choppies however said that there’s no conclusion yet regarding the occupancy . In a interview with Business Daily, he said, “We are currently negotiating with the owners of the mall but nothing is signed yet. We hope to have a positive conclusion to the talks by the end of January,”
Apart from the seven ukwala stores that were acquired early last year ,Choppies now has 11 stores across the country with plans underway to open a new outlet at South Field Mall,a flagship branch that will occupy atleast 44,000 square feet with the dependence of the high population density in Embakasi, Pipeline, Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Utawala in Embakasi.Another one is also set to start running at the soon-to-be-opened Kiambu Mall, a space previously allocated for Nakumatt.Other places will include Nairobi Pipeline Estate ,Donholm and Imara Daima.
The retailer shops are likely to open its doors on January 25 as it seek to fill the gap left following the closure of the loss-making Uchumi Supermarket and Nakumatt Supermarkets.
When asked if they seek to be any different from the failing supermarkets, MS Evelyn Amondi said it’s very hard to determine that. She said “We are a Kenyan chain, and therefore, it is Kenyans who can drive the success of this supermarket. We have so far absorbed talented locals, some of whom have been sent abroad for training,” This was to imply that their success can only be guaranteed by Kenyans, a perception necessary for any achievements.
The branches will be specializing mainly on core edibles, groceries and fresh foods, including meat, freshly baked products, fruit and vegetables, ready-to-eat and ready- to- cook meals. This will be among other items such as household and glasswares.
The stores is however said to be operating below break-even especially in Kenya,Zambia and Mozambique which are it’s new markets. The store is now in operations in seven African countries and has over 217 stores.
It’s a new year and we can only wish Choppies the very best. It’s not too late to dominate.
