Nokia is a Finnish multinational corporation which was founded on the 12 May 1865 as a single paper mill operation but later went into technology and founded several sectors including cable, mobile devices, paper products, rubber boots and tires as well telecommunications infrastructure equipment.
In 1982, Nokia introduced the first digital local telephone exchange in Europe and the world’s first car phone for the Nordic Mobile Telephone analog standard. By 1998, Nokia had transformed to become the world leader in mobile phones and this continued for a number of years close to one decade.
In its reign, Nokia had managed to acquire several companies and products among them Siemen’s which it took over in 2013 and Alcatel-Lucent in 2016 to help deepen and widen the global reach.
However,in 2011, Microsoft took over it with a bid to strengthen their position in the highly competitive smartphone market but that deal worked negatively for the company.However, with the bid to revive the company,HMD Global Oy,decided to reinvest in the brand.In December 2016, HMD started selling Nokia Phones once more and by the end of January 2017, the company had announced their first Nokia-branded smartphone, the Nokia 6.
An year later, the company is now commanding a 5% market share of the world’s mobile phone industry. This has now made it the number 6 mobile phone brand globally. With only an year of come back, it follows OPPO closely , which takes up 6.8% of the industry. The rest of the markets do not have great or significant difference compared to the number of years in operation. Xiaomi was the number four with 7%, with Huawei, Samsung and Apple taking up the top positions with 10.2%, 18.4% and 19.2% market share respectively.
Nokia has further gone ahead to dominate some of the major markets and is now the 2nd Largest phone market in India and China. The company will this year be featured in Mobile World Congress with expectations that it will make more announcements regarding their plans.
